Moore is suspended for defying a federal order to remove his Ten Commandments monument
The chief justice had promised eight days earlier that he would not budge; the Court of the Judiciary moved first.
For two years, a 5,280-pound granite monument to the Ten Commandments had sat in the rotunda of Alabama's Supreme Court building, installed by Chief Justice Roy Moore without his colleagues' consent. A federal judge had ordered it removed, an appeals court had upheld that order, and the August 20, 2003 deadline had passed with the monument still standing.
