Gunboats and cavalry corner Morgan at the Ohio; 1,025 raiders captured at Buffington Island ford

Morgan himself escapes northeast with a few hundred men after five weeks of burning bridges and looting towns across Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio.

For nearly five weeks, John Hunt Morgan's cavalry had ridden loose through Kentucky, Indiana, and Ohio, burning bridges and looting towns as Union columns tried to catch him. On July 19, 1863, the raid was checked at a ford on the Ohio River near Buffington Island, where U.S. Navy gunboats and pursuing cavalry under Edward Hobson caught the raiders trying to cross into West Virginia. More than half of Morgan's command, 1,025 men in total, were captured during the battle. Morgan himself, with a few hundred survivors, turned northeast and kept running…
