JFK Jr.'s plane goes down in Atlantic haze; he, his wife, and her sister are dead
The Piper Saratoga vanished from radar at 9:41 p.m., seven and a half miles short of Martha's Vineyard, in conditions that had erased the horizon.
On the night of July 16, 1999, a Piper Saratoga carrying John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, and her sister Lauren Bessette left Essex County Airport in New Jersey bound for Martha's Vineyard. Kennedy, flying without an instrument rating, chose a direct path over open water instead of following the coastline.
