For thirty-six years, the Union Jack had flown over Detroit, a fur-trading outpost the British held even after losing the Revolutionary War. Jay's Treaty required them out by June 1796, but logistics ran long. British forces withdrew from Detroit in 1796 in accordance with the Jay Treaty, and American forces subsequently took possession of the town…
