NASA opens a $56 million steel-and-concrete hangar at Kennedy to assemble the space station
The 457,000-square-foot Space Station Processing Facility opens after the Operations and Checkout Building ran out of room for ISS hardware.
By 1991, the Operations and Checkout Building at Kennedy Space Center had run out of room — and the International Space Station hadn't been built yet. Congress had just approved NASA's redesigned plans for the station, and someone had to find space to assemble it. On June 23, 1994, NASA officially opened the Space Station Processing Facility, a $56 million, 457,000-square-foot complex built from reinforced concrete and 4,300 tons of steel.
