The signals intelligence ship was sailing in international waters off Sinai, monitoring a six-day-old war, when the 23-minute assault began.

Six days into a war Israel was winning decisively, an American intelligence-gathering ship was sailing in international waters off the Sinai coast, monitoring the conflict. On June 8, 1967, Israeli Air Force jets and Navy torpedo boats attacked USS Liberty — a signals intelligence vessel assigned to the Sixth Fleet — in a sustained assault lasting 23 minutes, killing 34 crew members and wounding 171 others. Israel apologized, calling the attack a case of mistaken identity. The United States accepted that explanation. Dozens of survivors, and several senior American officials, never did…
